Lucas Schirbel

PhD Student
Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences
Northwestern University

Role: Lucas mentors undergraduate students working on projects related to improving vectorization algorithms for seismology traces and developing methods to extract metadata from scanned seismograms. He also serves as a liaison between the seismology group and the software development team, ensuring that the software meets the needs of the seismology community.

Bio: Lucas’ research interests lie in trying to understand the processes that govern the evolution and present day landscape we observe on Earth. Seismic waves originated in earthquakes serve as a tool to look inside our planet and extract insights about its structure and composition. Lucas also studies earthquake source mechanisms to better understand how our planet is currently reshaping itself and the forces that are responsible for it, trying to improve our understanding of the Earth’s dynamics.
